This report is a general document describing the capacity of the paging channel and provide some rough planning guidelines on dimensioning this channel in order to avoid loss of paging messages. The system characterizes on the Nokia Base Station Sub-System and review on factors which influenced the capacity of the paging channel in the air interface. In this aspect, the capacity of the abis-interface is also examined as the paging capacity and abis load are highly correlated. Based on this information the theoretical capacity of the paging channel can be calculated and thus the maximum number of subscribers that can be served within a Location Area can be established. Assumptions have to be made, as the general GSM traffic characteristics are random by nature. In this calculation, it is assumed that consecutive paging messages are equal distancely spaced in the time domain. Of course, this does not hold true in live networks, however it is possible to revise the maximum paging messages that can be processed by a Base Transceiver Station (BTS) of a given Common Control Channel (CCCH) configuration. Based on this value, it is possible to establish recommendations concerning the maximum number of subscribers within a Location Area. It is assumed that the reader have a firm understanding of GSM Radio Network terminologies in order to understand the terms and concepts used in this document.
