The future GSM-R will play an important role on high-speed railway communication; the handover algorithm for high-speed environment is one of the key technologies, which need to be solved promptly in high-speed railway. This paper analyses the handover algorithms for GSM-R system, and gives out their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, it brings the group cell and group handover concept into the GSM-R system, forming one kind of new handover algorithm which is more suitable for those mobile users with high-speed. Finally, it compares the GSM-R performance before applying group cell technology with after applying group cell technology by theoretical analysis. The results show that the algorithm may improve the system performance effectively, such as, rising the communication quality, reducing the drop call rate, improving system frequency utilization ratio.
